Bloggers know the importance of social networking to get the word out about their blogs and websites, but knowing when to stop and get some work done is very important. I have seen signs of this in myself lately and have come to realize it’s time to get back to business. I won’t say which of these signs I have exhibited, but if you’re trying to run a business online going down this path can be very non-productive.
- Your friends on Facebook know more about you than your spouse.
- You have found 7,000 people to follow on Twitter, but haven’t called your mother in over 2 weeks.
- You haven’t seen the light of day besides going to work in over a week.
- You have dropped 600 Entrecards every day for the last month; the old fashioned way.
- You’re best material is left in comments.
- You check Twitter every 5 minutes because you’re afraid of missing something.
- You can’t remember the PIN for your debit card, but you know the passwords for all 200 sites that you belong to by heart. FYI, I do not belong to 200 Social Networking Sites. Only 100; JK I really only use about 10 or less regularly. I’m not sure where I’d find time for more than that.
- Joe Schmo from New Mexico giving your Stumble home page a “thumbs down” throws you into a deep depression for over a month.
- Sex, what’s that? I might miss a Tweet.
- I have a blog? What’s the URL again?
This post is not really meant to be serious, but it could be a heads up to those of you trying to make money blogging or running any other type of online business.
What are some other good signs of social networking addiction that you can think of?

I can relate to #5 You’re best material is left in comments. I’ve wondered if I should spend the time on my posts, rather than some very detailed comments. But it’s hard not to do, when you find a wonderful post.

You are soooooo right ~ it’s addictive ~ like EC dropping…sometimes I think it’s all a virtual world online..I mean people who are great friends on the internet thousands of miles away may not grow quite fond of each other if they were to meet in person…

@Avy – I am the same way; if someone visits my Stumble page and doesn’t give it a thumbs up I think “What the heck is wrong with me?” Then I tell myself that Stumbleupon users are a fickle bunch and all is good in my world.

You have given the most addicted – Twitter and Entrecard there. Nothing much else that we can explain about addiction here.

This was a hilarious post and you are so right. I think social networking, though very useful, is similar to the Sirens that call you into the luring arms, while all the while destroying you minute by minute until you’re completely submerged underwater. Fight the urge!!!!
